With this in mind, LAB Miami Ventures decided to create the Future of Logistics Technology Summit to fill a void and bring together industry leaders and some of the brightest and most innovative logistics startups in the region.

The Future of Logistics Tech Summit is the first event of its kind, focusing solely on technology and how it is causing rapid and unprecedented change in the logistics industry. The program has a curated agenda including panels on topics such as blockchain and autonomous vehicles – a startup pitch competition, and keynote speeches by leading industry disruptors.

Rimas Kapeskas is VP of Strategy at UPS and Managing Director of the UPS Strategic Enterprise Fund (SEF) – corporate venture capital unit of global transportation and logistics firm UPS (NYSE: UPS), investing in early to mid-stage startup companies that are strategically relevant to UPS’ business, a position he has held since April 2011. Rimas oversees all operations of the fund, including sourcing and evaluating investment opportunities, facilitating ongoing relationships between UPS, the venture capital community and portfolio companies, and management of the fund staff. Rimas expanded UPS’ investment focus from US-only to global, adding investments in Asia, Europe and Latin America. Beyond investing, Rimas is also VP of Corporate Strategy and coordinates tech transfer and direct application of new capabilities for UPS and its clients.

Rimas was previously director of UPS Product R&D and UPS Product Innovation marketing director and has also been involved in diverse roles in marketing, sales, planning and integration of international acquisitions and related IT. Technologies he’s researched and invested in include robotics, drones, autonomous/connected vehicles, AI, IoT, 3D/additive manufacturing, sharing economy, blockchain, micro-finance, energy efficiency/sustainability and other next gen, industry 4.0, hi-tech and business solutions. Currently sourcing technology and emerging market spaces for accelerating sustainable improvements in global supply chains, ecommerce, distribution, logistics and other related sectors.

Rimas holds a master’s degree in business administration from the Goizueta Business School at Emory University and a bachelor’s of science degree from the University of Connecticut with concentration in medical science and public health. He has also completed executive education programs at University of Stanford Law School – Directors College and at the Venture Capital Institute where he is currently on the faculty.

Rimas is active as board director or observer with several SEF portfolio companies and is on the Corporate Venture Advisory Board of the National Venture Capital Association. Rimas is a board director on multiple non-profits, including Junior Achievement of Georgia and Dunwoody Nature Center, and participates in numerous startup programs and competitions as a coach, mentor and/ or judge including Venture Atlanta, TechStars, Dynamo Accelerator, MassChallenge, Village Capital’s Energy program and the Global Social Venture Competition (GSVC).

Karen M. Jones is Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) for Ryder System, Inc. and a member of Ryder’s Executive Leadership Team. She is responsible for leading the company’s Fleet Management Solutions (FMS), Dedicated Transportation Solutions (DTS), and Supply Chain Solutions (SCS) Marketing efforts, as well as integrating the management of all marketing and brand-related activities across Ryder to drive growth and enhance brand value.

Prior to this position, Karen was CMO for the Fortune 300 Company NRG/Reliant Energy, Inc., where she was responsible for launching the company’s new corporate brand. Prior to that, she served as Senior Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Communications for DHL Express U.S., and was a member of its U.S. Management Board. Her marketing efforts at DHL resulted in the largest awareness increases in the company’s history and within the logistics category, which were considered a major contributor to the advancement of DHL’s recognition in the “Top 100 Most Valuable Brands” by BrandZ.

Prior to DHL, Karen served in positions responsible for worldwide brand advertising, sponsorship, strategic alliances, and marketing for Hewlett Packard and Compaq Computer Corporation. She was named “Marketer of the Year” by BtoB Magazine in 2005, and was ranked in the publication’s annual “Best Issue” from 2006-2008. In 2014 she was recognized as one of the Most Powerful and Influential Women in Business by the National Diversity Council. She has also served as a panel speaker for the Sports Business Journal’s Sports Symposium and made appearances on television, such as the NBC’s “Today Show”, “Good Morning America”, and Fox Networks. Karen serves on the executive boards for the Broward Public Library Foundation and the Jackson Health Foundation.

Jon Fox, a serial entrepreneur, began his career trading merchandise globally from his home at 20 years old. Within a couple years, he had turned his hobby into a 25 million dollar distribution company.  Fox has spun up and exited multiple companies in the transportation and food services verticals, including Beachwood Distribution, and Deja Foods and currently owns Lewisco Holdings, an international distribution company. Over the course of his career Fox has shipped billions of dollars in cargo.

Most recently, Fox co-founded Fr8 Network. Recognizing the fractured nature of the $13 trillion global logistics industry, Fr8 Network is developing the Fr8 Protocol, a standardized protocol data layer creating seamless information flow throughout the entire logistics chain by allowing any system to connect to the same data as the single source of truth. The Fr8 Protocol defines data and connectivity standards for any stakeholder in any region, enabling new efficiencies and capabilities for logistics systems worldwide.

Fox also serves as Managing Director of 2857 Capital, a family investment office. His expertise focuses specifically in capital markets, and marketplace opportunities that unite fractured industries.

Fox is an advocate of distributed systems and their impact on both social and economic systems.  He is a frequent public speaker, offering thought leadership on how blockchain will impact the future of freight, logistics, and supply chain.

Dr. Erik H. Volkerink was the former CTO of $30B Flex, which employs over 200,000 professionals, and a former consulting professor of Stanford. He served as C-level officer of 3 public companies and was involved in three $1B+ transactions including one IPO. He holds an EE PHD from Stanford and a MBA from Wharton.

He served as Heptagon’s Chief Business Officer leading the product business units including 3D, illumination, sensing & connectivity. AMS acquired Heptagon in 2017. Erik also served as CEO of RF Digital Corp developing IOT solutions. Heptagon acquired RF Digital. Previously he served as Founder & CEO of Liquid Interface Technologies, using AI to optimize IOT based on habits and sold the assets to RF Digital.

Erik served as the CTO of Flex, where he reorganized engineering services in centers-of-excellence addressing the building blocks of smart products thru partnerships, founded the innovation labs & the pro-active innovation services business, and grew this to over $1B+ in pull through sales, leading to a corporate go-to-market strategy shift towards smart products. Previously he served as the GM & VP of the design services business of Flex’ $3B+ industrial group. As CTO of Advantest he founded the solid-state drive business which became the 3rd business group. He previously served as CTO of Verigy, developing automated test solutions, which went IPO in 2006 and was subsequently acquired by Advantest. He founded SEMI Test Vision and led the organization towards winning the TTTC/IEEE Most Successful Event Award twice.

Erik is an investor in startups and frequent keynote speaker. He is an example of how people with learning disabilities can overcome their deficiencies; and this is the foundation for his passion with respect to education which led him to launch a non-profit educational institution, the Dutch School Silicon Valley. Erik previously worked as an Electrician after completing special education schooling for kids with learning disabilities.
